I just started this series but I am loving it so far.
A young man discovers at 8 years old that he has the gift of magic. His mother is terrified however, and makes him promise to never tell anyone for fear of nobles finding out and forcing him into servitude. He keeps his promise until after his mother's death after he meets and temporarily houses a trained wizard. Their talks convince him to go and travel the world and see how far he can go.
